I have been dithering over this one, as it isn't my usual cup of tea but I'd been swayed by reviews, etc. I read Fatherland a while ago but did not like it as much as SS GB. I have not read his historical novels or Ghost but various family members have. I won't prioritise The Fear Index in the light of your excellent review.

BTW I do like Ridpath's Icelandic novels. They have a love of the culture/history (sagas and so on) that seems missing in the native Icelandic crime fiction that's been translated. I did read some of Ridpath's financial thrillers when they came out but I think the series got less good after the first two or three.

I would like to read a really good financial thriller/crime novel, though. I read one by Martin Baker a year or two ago and was underwhelmed. I think it is one of those genres where the author is tempted to go for the global meltdown/conspiracy angle, whereas smaller is often better.

Nice to see you posting again, btw.Maxine Clarkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06628509319992204770noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2815598431632330192.post-37577255299515714722011-06-16T15:07:23.417+01:002011-06-16T15:07:23.417+01:00Looking Mens Suits for your husband? I do remember seeing the Clint Eastwood film and thinking it wasn't as good as the books I'd read by this author. Somehow things seem to have worked, much in the same way that brining chicken did result in a very tender piece of meat.

In both cases though there's scope for improvement. Kathy Casey suggests using a barbecue for brined chicken, and I can assert that a griddle is no real substitute, and for all that the Kitchen Range delivered a result ultimately, first impressions remain really significant.

I'll shop there again, and in not wanting to see another bit of the high street fade away I'd encourage everyone else in the Beckenham area to do so, but I can't help hoping they listen and start being the engaged business they should be, and that Beckenham High Street needs.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13420235913245821752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2815598431632330192.post-37248355159772158442011-04-10T16:23:07.015+01:002011-04-10T16:23:07.015+01:00I live in one of those Surrey destinations, so thi...I live in one of those Surrey destinations, so this is an interesting review, thanks. That said, I'm often skeptical about films of books that I've really enjoyed, especially when they're as sprawling as Stieg Larsson's work. There's nothing especially ground breaking or new here, but the plots do rattle along and they're ideal for their intended purpose.

A Scott Fenney is a returning character - from "The Colour of Law". It's reintroduced in such a way that this was obvious shortly after getting on the plane and starting the book, which maybe highlights where Gimenez falls down a bit. I like his work, I've read all of them with a degree of enthusiasm, but I need to work to remember the individual plot details, and as for recalling character's names? While I enjoyed the book, staying awake longer than I should have to finish it, I really don't see myself revisiting it, while other, less graphic crime fiction I'll happily reread should the mood take me. It would have been easy for a book with a bodycount quite as high as this to end up indulging in the pornography of violence, and the fact that it avoids this says that Stark's got a certain something.

I'll be really interested in what subsequent books look like, as he refines what he wants to write about, gets the first book rush of enthusiasm out of his system, and perhaps critically builds a rapport with his editor. Go in the right direction and he could be consistently good.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13420235913245821752noreply@blogger.com
